Laser Gum Surgery

LANAP® (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure)

Basic Steps of the LANAP® Protocol

Using the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®), Dr. Thomas Dickson can offer patients a less invasive gum disease treatment in Midvale, UT. Patients who are typically averse to gum surgery will find many benefits to this gentle dental care solution. However, before we can discuss these benefits, it is important that you understand how LANAP® works. In just six short steps, Dr. Dickson can remove up to 90 percent of inflammation after a single treatment!

Checking the Pocket Depth

The first step is to insert a small fiber between the teeth and gums to examine the depth of the periodontal pockets. This will show us the extent of the attachment loss so that we can adjust the strength of the treatment accordingly.

Removing Bacteria and Tissue

Dr. Dickson will use the PerioLase®MVP-7™to make an initial pass over the area and remove the bacteria and diseased tissue. Because the laser does not affect teeth, bone, or healthy tissue, LANAP® is considered a more gentle dental care solution than traditional surgery.

Promoting regrowth

During this step, Dr. Dickson will use the laser to make a second pass over the area to stimulate bone and tissue regrowth and help prevent tooth loss. This will also cause the blood to clot and stop the tissue from bleeding, making LANAP® not only a more gentle dental care solution, but a safer one as well.

Eliminating Calculus

Because the laser itself can only denature the calculus and not remove it, Dr. Dickson will use small ultrasonic scalers to eliminate calculus deposits from underneath the gum line.

Recompressing Tissue

Next, Dr. Dickson will recompress the tissue against the surface of teeth without using sutures.

Examining Teeth

While LANAP® is a more gentle dental care solution than traditional surgery; there is still a small chance of inflicting damage to teeth with bone loss. In the last and final stage of LANAP®, we will examine your bite and check your teeth for any signs of trauma.
