Gingivitis
1

Stage 1: Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the earliest and least severe form of gum disease tissue. It is caused by the buildup of plaque and bacteria along the gum line. At this stage, infected gum tissue will appear bright red and begin to swell and bleed. Because this is only a mild stage of gum disease, no permanent damage has occurred and the effects can still be reversed if treatment is sought right away.

Stage 2: Periodontitis

This is a moderately severe form of gum disease that occurs when infected gum tissue is neglected. At this stage, irreversible damage has been done to supporting bone and muscle fibers. The infected gum tissue has begun to detach from the surface of the teeth and small periodontal pockets have formed. In order to prevent the condition from worsening, immediate treatment is needed.

Stage 3: Advanced Periodontitis

Advanced periodontitis is the most severe form of infected gum tissue. This occurs when oral hygiene is poor and treatment is continually neglected. Periodontal pockets have grown deeper and tissue detachment has become more severe. It is possible for teeth to loosen and shift out of place. In order to prevent tooth loss from occurring, infected gum tissue must be treated right away.
